Does a setback frustrate or motivate you?
How do you deal with setbacks? Do you let it crumble you? Or is it your main source of motivation? For long time College Basketball coach Rick Pitino, his setback has led to one of the best comebacks in sports today. In the #CJJblog this week, we take a look at Coach Pitino’s dominant days (Kentucky, Louisville, and Celtics), his downfall (pay for play scandal in 2017), and all the way back again at St. John’s. What contributed to each section of his career? Enjoy.
Rise to Dominance
- Passion. Coach Pitino used his passion for basketball to rise so quickly in the coaching ranks. I attended one of his coaching seminars many years ago and he was one of the most passionate individuals I have ever met. His passion was infectious to those around him, especially his team.
- Work ethic. Nobody outworked Coach Pitino. His long hours and dedication to the game is what allowed him to grow so fast.
- Student of the game. He was always asking questions and learning how to be better. He was also a great teacher of the game, which is why he was such a great coach.
- Drive. He pushed those around him to be the best they could be. Rick also inspired others with his words and actions.
- Innovation. His coaching success at Providence in the late-80’s was primarily due to his ability to adapt and have his teams successfully utilize the three-point shot. Many people say he changed the game.
Downfall
- Arrogance. Many of you may remember the alleged “Pay to play” scandal involving Louisville and Coach Pitino from October 2017. It is my belief that his arrogance and casual demeanor led to these accusations and his ultimate departure from Louisville.
- Focus. Rick lost his focus and attention to detail. As a result, he lost the culture at Louisville and it resulted in his downfall from big time coaching options.
- Integrity. He lost his way when it came to integrity and decided to look the other way. It was his job to know everything going on with the Louisville Men’s basketball program and he failed to do so.
Comeback
- Willingness. His willingness to earn his way back into a top-tier coaching position cannot be ignored. You might know he spent some time at Iona building his way back up. But did you know he spent two seasons as the head coach of Panathinaikos in Greece prior to that? This allowed him to get his foot back in the coaching door.
- Basics. He has gone back to the basics and now his St. John’s team is a two-seed in the NCAA Tournament this year, having a remarkable season.
