Do you deserve to be a leader?

Why should others follow you?

Are you a leader who deserves to be followed? Or are you someone who thinks they should be followed? The difference is in your actions. As a professional speaker on leadership, I feel it’s very important to earn your role as a leader. In the #CJJblog this week I tell you exactly how you can do that with what I like to call The 8 C’s of Leadership. Enjoy.

  • Character. Are you the same person on and off the court (or office)? What actions do you take to earn the trust of your team? If your actions don’t consistently match your words, your character will suffer.
  • Care.  Do you tell people you care about them with your words, or show them with your actions? Your team must know and feel how much you care about them.
  • Clarity. How clear are you with your communication? Instead of being in the mindset of I am being clear, think to yourself how can I be more clear to my team? Clarity in communication is kindness.
  • Confidence. Confidence is having a vision, being vulnerable, and welcoming new ideas. Arrogance is not confidence. Always seek the right idea, not your idea.
  • Competence. Do you study leadership as much as your industry or profession? To increase your competency, it’s imperative you implement the CANEI Formula: Constant and Never-Ending Improvement.
  • Curiosity. Being curious has tremendous value. Are you the CQA (Chief Question Asker) of your team? Asking questions is great, but listening to understand (not respond) is best.
  • Challenge. Experience your challenges and correct the behavior moving forward. Challenge yourself in a way that best suits you and your team. Are you excited or scared when life hands you a new challenge?
  • Consistent. As a leader, your actions matching your words is the most important area you should have consistency. Are you a role model who leads by example?

Did You Know?  Coach Jim Johnson recently spoke to his former team (Greece Athena High School boys basketball) before their NYS Section V AA2 semifinal game, and they won – advancing to the final on Saturday. Go Trojans!

Life Tip #28: When people think of a person with high integrity, they think of you.
