Do you need to find a mentor?

Have you ever had a mentor?

If you haven’t listened to the “Limitless Leadership Lounge” podcast episode from a few weeks ago, I highly suggest you do so – Check it out HERE.  Our guest, Clint Pulver gets into mentorship and how important it is.  In the #CJJblog this week, I give you the 5 C’s of Mentorship and how you can include them in your everyday life.  Enjoy.

  • Confidence.  Confidence, not arrogance.  This is a fine line, because sometimes arrogance and having an ego can be disguised as confidence.  Find someone who is confident and stands behind their words.
  • Credibility.  Has your mentor obtained the right results?  Have they had success in their field?  Consider their accomplishments and body of work as you choose a mentor.
  • Competence.  How intelligent are they?  Do they know what they are talking about?  They can be confident, but they need the knowledge to back it up.
  • Candor.  Is your mentor someone who sugarcoats their responses to you?  Or are they 100% genuine?  You should find someone who praises in public and critiques in private.
  • Caring.  Does your mentor have a good heart?  Do they care about you as a person?  You must make sure they always prioritize your best interests.  Remember the famous saying, people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.
  • Effective mentors.  Have a great head, but a better heart.  When making your mentor decision, it’s important to remember to do your research, but there will inevitably be some unknowns.  Go with your gut in your decision.

Did You Know?  Coach Jim Johnson made two speaking appearances to both athletes and coaches this week at SUNY Fredonia, a local state college here in Upstate NY.
