How do you know when someone is great?

As a leader, professional speaker, and former high school basketball coach, I study greatness quite a bit.  What makes someone truly great?  The top of your field is not an overnight thing.  It takes time and you must work hard to be better than everyone else.  This results in clues being left all over for us to study.  In the #CJJblog this week, I took at a look at three top athletes – Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, and Scottie Scheffler – to see what they do that makes them so great.  Enjoy.

  • Improvement.  Each of these guys always strive to get better and are true students of the game.  Are you happy with where your skills are at?  What are you doing to improve them?
  • Crunch time.  They are their best when their best is needed.  Teammates need a boost?  They step up for them.  In order to be great, you need to shine when winning is on the line.
  • Recovery.  Are you someone who bounces back quickly after a loss?  Or do you dwell on your mistakes?  Always have that “next play” mentality.
  • Leadership.  Each one of these athletes are great leaders.  Through good times and bad, they will be able to focus on the ultimate goal.  They rally the troops to where they need to go.
  • Lead by example.  Great leaders let their actions speak far louder than their words.  Do you walk the talk?  Or are your words hollow?
  • Competitors.  It’s no coincidence that those at the top of their field are usually the most competitive.  These three leaders are no different.  Are you a top competitor who embraces challenges?
  • Team first.  Always and forever, the team comes first.  The we over me mentality shines through in those who are great.  Aaron Rodgers?  Not so much.
