Graduation 2025: Words of wisdom

What is the best advice you received after graduation?

It’s college graduation season and it got me thinking about advice.  What advice would you give someone just graduating college or high school?  What would you tell yourself if you could go back in time?  In the #CJJblog this week, we do just that.  Here are 13 pieces of advice for any young aspiring leader entering into the professional world.  What would your advice be?

  • Passion.  Discover it.  Try new and exciting things as often as you can.  Life comes at you fast and may get in the way of things you want to do.  Do them now.
  • Keep learning.  Never stop growing your mind and educating yourself.  Start an idea journal with your best ideas throughout the day.
  • Self care.  Take care of yourself as much as possible.  Stay healthy with plenty of rest and keep your energy up.
  • Be aware.  Stay away from drugs and alcohol.  Consume in moderation and be responsible.
  • Relationships.  Always seek to build deeper relationships with others.  Friends, family members, coworkers, everyone is important.  Seek to add value to others and serve them first.
  • Mentors.  Seek a mentor in your desired field who has accomplished exactly what you wish to achieve with your life.  Also keep this in mind when choosing your first job post graduation.  Can you learn a lot from your boss and the team?
  • Challenge.  Challenging yourself will be one of your greatest assets because you know yourself best.  How do you operate?  What makes you tick?  Make sure to consistently do things that are difficult.  Start with once per month, then once per week, eventually doing something difficult every day.
  • Loved ones.  Never forget who helped you get to where you are today.  Who raised you?  Who taught you values?  Take care of them and never neglect those who helped you along the way.
  • Study leadership.  The world will always need great leaders.
  • Role models.  Who have you looked up to?  Act as if your peers are following you.
  • Activities.  What interests you?  Take part in fun activities along the way to fulfill your passions.
  • Laughter.  Take time to laugh and think each day.
  • Goals.  Challenge yourself with specific and measurable goals.  Make daily commits to achieve them.
