How can successful leaders be authentic and vulnerable?

Are you both authentic and vulnerable?

It can be tough to be authentic and scary to be vulnerable.  But, as effective leaders, we must be both.  Authenticity is something that should come naturally.  While vulnerability is more of a conscious decision.  How can we be both?  In the #CJJblog this week, I give you some tips on how to do exactly that.  Enjoy.

  • Authentic
    • Living the talk.  Do your actions match (or exceed) your words?  Are your core values evident in your actions?  Your actions should remain consistent whether you are alone or on stage.
    • Real talk.  How reluctant are you to address the elephant in the room?  Do you fluff up your words?  Are you a willing listener?  When being authentic, it’s important to ask questions before making accusations.
    • Care.  Caring about others can be tough, especially when others try to make it difficult.  Do you talk behind others’ back?  A good rule of thumb is to only talk about people who can hear you.
    • Raise standards.  Both for yourself and for your team.  You should always have higher standards for yourself than anyone else.
  • Vulnerable
    • Mistakes.  Admit to them, learn from them, and grow from them.  Also, you should be admitting them in public in front of those who need to hear it.
    • Truth.  Do you always share the truth?  It’s also important to remember there is a right time and place for doing so (one-on-one vs. in a team meeting).
    • Feedback.  Effective leaders find the right answer, not their answer.
    • Weaknesses.  What are yours?  Do those around you compliment what you don’t do well?  Effective leaders are also effective delegators.
