How can you build your brand effectively?

Can you hook your audience in just 60 seconds?

How do you communicate effectively with your target audience?  Are you able to capture their attention immediately?  In the #CJJblog this week, I use my most recent podcast episode with Sam Horn, CEO of The Intrigue Agency as inspiration.  Here are some tips on effective communication I learned from our fantastic conversation with Sam.  Enjoy!

  • Be one-of-a-kind.  Not one-of-many.  On the podcast, Sam tells an incredible story of how her son landed his dream job at Johnson Space Center in houston, TX.
  • Intrigue.  How do you create it?  According to Richard Branson, “Time is the new money.”  Here is the proven formula to create intrigue in your pitch within the first 30 seconds: 1) Don’t tell your audience anything yet.  Instead, ask three “Did you know…?” questions that are aimed to shock and amaze, 2) Use the statement “Imagine…” followed by three outstanding benefits or positive outcomes, 3) Close with “You don’t have to imagine…” and list out your benefits with testimonials.
  • Storytelling.  Sam Horn outlines the WWWAVE Formula to ensure a captivating story:
    • W: Where/When does it take place?
    • W: Who is the main character?
    • W: What is said (dialogue)?
    • A: Adversity.  What went wrong?
    • V: Victory.  What are the lessons learned and how were they overcome?
    • E: Emotional content.  End with an emotional question.
  • Phrases to live by as an effective communicator:
    • Champions never use the word should.
    • Someday is not a day of the week.
    • Show the shift – How can you make it better?
    • Reasons or results?  If you are doing it, focus on results.
