How difficult is it to replace a coaching legend?

How do you replace a legend?

We all want to become a legend.  Sustaining a high level of success for a very long time can be very difficult for many reasons.  How do you handle being the replacement?  How do you step in after a legend has stepped down?  Think about Alabama Football (Saban), the New England Patriots (Belichick), and even the UCLA Bruins (Wooden) and how difficult it was for the next coach who came in after them.  In the #CJJblog this week, I give you my thoughts on how you can replace a coaching legend.  Enjoy.

  • Challenges.  Before you step into the position, think about the role and the challenges come along with it?  Is it the right fit for you?  Do your strengths align with what the organization needs?
  • CQA.  Be the Chief Question Asker and connect with those who lived through the past success?  What worked well?  What should we keep/change?
  • Elephant.  Address the elephant in the room and communicate directly with your team.  How can we keep our standards high?  Embrace the challenges head on.
  • Values.  What are your non-negotiables?  How do they differ from the previous (legend) leader?  Are you being clear as you communicate these to your team?  Make sure to be consistent with both your values and consequences.
  • Changes.  What changes are you going to make?  Make sure they are small and clear.  The organization (likely) doesn’t need a whole revamping of the structure, just put your stamp on it.
  • Players.  Have regular team meetings, especially early on.  How are we feeling?  Anything we need to get off our chests?  This is also great for culture building.
  • One-on-one.  Make sure to also meet with a select group of players (and staff) individually.  Align their individual goals with those of the team.
  • Model.  Are you a great role model for your team members?  Remember, you are always on stage and the spotlight is brighter when you take over for a legend.  Be the rock your new team needs.
  • Tradition.  How are you embracing the traditions already established at the organization?  Reach out to former players for visits and guest appearances.  Keep the traditions alive.
