How do you build momentum?

How does momentum affect your success?

In sports and life, there will be events that build momentum as well as things that go against you.  As a coach for over 35 years, I am very familiar with momentum – good or bad.  It can either help or hurt you.  In the #CJJblog this week, I give you some tips on how you can build momentum for both you individually and your team.  Enjoy.

  • You (Individual)
    • Mission.  What is your Personal Mission Statement?  Is it clear and defined?  What is your purpose in life?  Once you are able to answer these questions for yourself and help others first, you will find that momentum shifts in your favor.
    • Non-negotiables.  What do you hold yourself accountable to every day?  For me, I am consistent with my exercise and exercise for at least 30 minutes per day.
    • Self-care.  How well do you take care or your body with sleep and eating habits?
    • Ideas.  Are you in search of good ideas?  How do you capture them?  Create an Intentional Growth Plan and write in an Idea Journal daily.
    • Relationships.  How well do you build relationships with others?  Make it a priority to connect with at least one person each day to grow your relationship with them
  • Your team
    • Core values.  Are they clear to your team members?  What is expected of them?  Do the behaviors of everyone involved match these core values?
    • Inspiration.  Do you provide daily quotes, stories, and examples to your team?
    • Teacher.  Are you an expert in your field?  Can your team count on your for advice and knowledge?  Be passionate about your work and momentum will follow.
    • Standards.  It is important to have high team standards while also providing a caring environment.  When your team knows you care, they will produce great things.
    • Empowerment.  Does your team know you believe in them?  Empower your team members to become great leaders.
    • Respect.  Not only your own team, but your opponent as well.  Momentum is built off victories, and you can’t bunch together victories while disrespecting your opponents.
    • Routines.  What disciplines do you have in place for your team?  Are you a soft leader with no daily routines?
