How do you instill discipline to your team?

Are you a disciplined leader?

Instilling discipline among your team is a complex process that you must start from day one.  How do you establish credibility and structure amongst your team members?  Do you have the right approach? With everything going on this season (and the Myles Garrett incident from Thursday night) with the Cleveland Browns, I wanted to dedicate the #CJJblog this week to giving you some tips on how to instill discipline into your team.  Enjoy.

  • Lead by example. Be a role model.  How do you conduct yourself both on and off the field?  Are you practicing what you preach?
  • Sweat with your players. Participating in a drill or workout can go a long way in establishing discipline.  How do you gain respect from your team?  Do you get your hands dirty?
  • Be clear with expectations. Meet with other leaders and captains on the team to be on the same page with your expectations.  It appears the Browns have an extreme lack of clarity between ownership and the players.
  • Non-negotiables. What beliefs or values do you want to be non-negotiable?  For me, it’s tardiness.  If you can’t be on time, be early.
  • Giving and getting feedback from everyone in the organization is crucial.  It also helps to build respect among your team.
  • Organized practices. As well as meetings.  Do you have your thoughts together with what you want to accomplish?  Or, are you winging it?  Don’t waste time.
  • Share accomplishments with your team and recognize success.  Who is doing the right thing?  Share this publicly.
  • Assign roles. Give leadership roles and tasks to be completed by team members.  What responsibilities can you delegate to others?

Did You Know?  Coach Jim Johnson was in attendance as one of his former players (and Julius Irving pre-season award watchlist member), Anthony Lamb, lead Vermont to a 61-59 victory over St. Bonaventure last Friday.

Life Tip #40:  Add more disciplines to your life to become a more attractive person.
