Are you in the top 5% of your field?
Being at the top of your field is difficult to obtain, but the journey is worth it. Is your goal to be middle of the pack or cream of the crop? Depending on your line of work, the path may be slightly different, but the core principals should remain the same. In the #CJJblog this week, I give you some tips and tricks on how you can rise to the top 5% (or better) of your field. Enjoy.
- Passion. Are you currently combining your abilities and passions? For me, I was passionate about basketball, but discovered early on that I would never be in the NBA. Coaching was the logical pivot and I fell in love.
- Study. Are you a self-educator in your field? Or do you need someone to spoonfeed you information?
- Relationships. Communicating with others will increase your emotional intelligence (EQ) and allow you to feel more comfortable being the Chief Question Asker (CQA) for your team. How do you build relationships with others?
- Teaching. In order to best master your craft, you must be in a position to teach others. Your knowledge goes to another level when you are the one doing the education from your own experiences and education.
- Communication. How well (or not well) do you communicate with others? Do you study communication like it’s just as important as your field?
- Learn-it-all. We all know what a know-it-all is, but are you a learn-it-all? What does your Intentional Growth Plan look like? Become a lifelong learner and never stop growing your mind.
- Best of the best. Who in your field has achieved greatness? What have they done to get there? Learn from the ones already at the top and find a mentor to help you along the way.
- Surroundings. Who are you surrounding yourself with? Do you go to clinics, mastermind groups, and conferences to speak with others in your field?

Did You Know? Coach Jim Johnson got to meet former ESPN NBA Senior Analyst and current St. Bonaventure University Men’s Basketball GM, Adrian Wojnarowski at the Golisano Center in Rochester, NY.
