How to be a better father: A challenge to all dads

How often do you work on your parenting skills?

With Father’s Day last weekend, it got me thinking about the true importance of being a good dad. My son is an adult now, but parenting never stops, no matter the age of your children. Whether you are raising young children, or an empty-nester, you can always improve your skills. In the #CJJblog this week, I give you 11 tips on how you can be a better father. Enjoy.

  • Integrity. Are you living your values every day? When your kids think of a person with integrity, do they think of you?
  • Role model. Leading by example will always be one of the most important things in parenting. Remember, you are always on stage for your kids, no matter their age.
  • Rock. Are you the rock your kids need? In a storm of chaos and confusion that is the world, your children need constant stability from you.
  • Communication. Are you the Chief Question Asker (CQA) for your kids? How often do you check in on how they’re feeling? Remember, advice is only accepted when it’s wanted. Ask questions, check for understanding, and verify you are correct.
  • Expectations. Are you setting clear expectations with your kids? Do they know what is expected of them? Setting clear boundaries and expectations is a valuable part of parenthood.
  • Servant Leadership. Set your kids up for success. Let them lead themselves, so they can lead others.
  • Experiences. As a father, it is your duty to create memories and positive experiences with your children. What is the best memory you have with your kids?
  • Check ins. Are you purposefully checking in with your kids? How are they feeling? This is especially important when they are younger.
  • Guidance. Your kids need guidance. Are you guiding them on the proper advice on personal mission statements, core values, and life as a whole?
  • Accountability. Everyone makes mistakes. Do you take responsibility and show your children the importance of being accountable for your actions?
  • Love. Unconditional love for your kids. Always. Never waver.
