Do you know when to quit?
Quitting is a touchy subject. It can certainly be perceived as a sign of weakness, but if managed properly, knowing when to quit can be a tremendous asset for you. Do you find yourself quitting things quickly and frequently? After seeing San Francisco 49ers Linebacker De’Vondre Campbell suspended for three games (rest of the regular season) after refusing to go into the game this past week – because he lost his starting spot – I decided to look into quitting this week in the #CJJblog. I give the circumstances when quitting should never be an option, as well as some times when it should at least be considered. Enjoy.
- Never quit
- Team sport. You should never quit on your team. Ever. You owe your team your full effort at all times, no matter the situation. If you are on a team, you are committing yourself to give it your all.
- Score. No matter the score, you must never quit. Giving it your all, even in a blowout is a great way to earn respect from your teammates.
- No matter what. There is a lot of value in perseverance within something that you decided to start. No matter the adversity you experience, you should never quit within a previously agreed upon timeframe.
- Adversity. Stuff happens all the time. When things don’t go according to plan, it should not be used as an excuse to quit.
- First attempt. Have you ever quit after a first attempt at something? Don’t ever do that again. Always learn and try again. Make the necessary adjustments and see how things progress from there.
- Consider quitting
- Career. Are you in a bit of a rut with your career? Have you lost your passion and drive for the work you do? Maybe a career change is in your future. It’s okay to consider quitting if you can no longer feel the passion in your heart.
- Performance. Has your performance dipped recently? Are you no longer performing at a high level? Maybe it’s time to consider hanging it up.
- Health. Is your job or activity affecting your health? Maybe considering a change is the right move.
- Pros/Cons. If after making a good ole’ fashioned pros and cons list, it’s abundantly clear a change needs to be made… Quitting may be acceptable.
