One-on-One meetings: A guide

How do you hold one-on-one meetings?

If you are a leader, you will likely be having individual meetings with your team members.  How do you conduct them?  Is there any structure or do you just wing it?  How frequently?  In the #CJJblog this week, I give you some tips on how you can optimize your one-on-one meetings with your squad and maximize performance.

  • Early on.  Early in the season (or your relationship) is crucial to have an individual meeting with someone.  Get to know them as a person and discuss values, interests, etc.
  • Goals.  What are the goals of the team member?  How do they align with the team goals?
  • Weekly check-in.  These should be 10-15 minutes in duration.  Make sure to build your relationship and also discuss work/business.  Ask them “How can I support you?” and “How can I be a better leader for you?”
  • Assessment.  What is your team member working on?  What are their strengths and weaknesses?  What do they want to work on?  What do they need to start, change, or maintain?
