Pyramid of Success – Review (Part One)

What does your pyramid of success look like?

If you are familiar with John Wooden, then you are likely familiar with his Pyramid of Success.  In the #CJJblog these next two weeks, I break down this famous pyramid and give you my thoughts on each topic.  This week will be the bottom half, with next week going through the top.  What are your thoughts on success?  Is it as complex as some make it out to be?  Or does it boil down to some more simple concepts?

  • Industriousness.  Your work ethic must be second to none.  In order to be the best, you must be consistently out-working others.  Remember, the harder you work, the luckier you get.
  • Friendship.  Are you surrounding yourself with the right people?  Those you associate with should be encouraging, supporting, pushing, and sharing in your accomplishments.
  • Loyalty.  Are you a loyal person?  Loyalty starts with yourself.  You should always make and keep promises to yourself and to others.
  • Cooperation.  How do you support others?  Are you consistently curious and ask how you can help?  Be an aggressive listener and remember the TEAM acronym – Together, Each Achieves More.
  • Enthusiasm.  Do you have passion and excitement for everything you do?  Remember, nothing great has ever been accomplished without enthusiasm.
  • Self-control.  What is self-control?  I define it as the ability to respond in a positive or calm way in the face of adversity.  This was something that I did not professionally excel at until 2006, which was near the end of my coaching career.
  • Alertness.  Be an observer of others and learn from them.  Are you alert enough in your surroundings where you can tell who/what will help you achieve success?
  • Initiative.  You must have the willingness to be a self-starter.  Take action and don’t be afraid to fail, because that’s how you learn.
