Questions to ask a team preparing for the postseason

How do you prepare a team for a big game?

Last week, I had the opportunity to talk with the Greece Athena High School boys basketball team (my former school) before their first Section V Class AA2 game.  Getting prepared mentally for postseason play is just as important as physical preparation.  We had a great discussion about preparation and how to get into a championship mindset.  In the #CJJblog this week, I give you some of the questions that we talked about.  Enjoy.

  • Who is the first person you should lead?  Yourself.  Take responsibility.
  • Do you have enough talent to win a championship?
  • Are you willing to put the team goals ahead of your own individual goals?
  • Are you willing to invest the time and effort necessary to play at your best?
  • Are you leading by example in both the good times and bad?
  • When things go well for others, do you cheer them on, or hate hearing about their successes?
  • Do you care and trust each other?  Do you have each other’s backs?
  • When things go wrong, is it your responsibility to improve the situation or do you blame others?
  • Why can you win a championship?
  • What will be your biggest obstacle to winning a championship?
