Questions with Coach (Part Two)
Last week, our Marketing Director, Doug Potter, sat down with Coach and asked him some questions on leadership, motivation, and teamwork. The #CJJblog this week will be part two of a two-part series. Below are the questions (and Coach’s answers) to the 2nd five questions of the sit down. Check out the first half of the interview from last week HERE! Enjoy.
- What is the most important characteristic of a good teammate? The “we > me” mentality. When someone seeks to add value to their teammates, everyone wins. Lead by example and share each other’s strengths.
- How can you plan for your future as a leader? Gain clarity on the goals of your team. The leader should know all goals (team and individual) and make sure they are aligned. When discussing a one-year plan, ask yourself “Why wouldn’t we hit our goals and what can we do to address these concerns?”
- What can every leader always improve upon? Yourself. Lead and grow yourself first. Be curious and become a life long learner. Become a better listener and be open to all feedback.
- What is the most common mistake new leaders make? There are four things that come to mind: 1) Overanalyze and think they need all the answers, 2) Complacency, 3) Stop managing by walking around and being present, and 4) Stop listening and growing with their team.
- What is one thing you wish you knew when you started coaching? Prioritize building bonds and relationships with others at all costs. Focus less on X’s and O’s, and more on Johnny’s and Joe’s. Success attracts success. To become an effective leader, you must be confident and humble.
