What did we learn from Rory?

Did you watch the 89th Masters Tournament?

Last weekend, golf fans saw Rory McIlroy finally complete his career grand slam (win all four major tournaments) after he beat Justin Rose in a playoff, to take home his first green jacket at Augusta National Golf Club.  Those who watched on Sunday were treated to an incredible round of golf.  In the #CJJblog this week, we dive into Rory’s perseverance and what we can learn from his quest for history.  Here are six observations of Rory’s journey.  Enjoy.

  • Hardship.  Don’t shy away from it.  Instead, embrace it and lean into the struggle.  This will make the accomplishment that much sweeter.
  • Mindset.  Do you have a never give up mentality?  Rory had been very vocal about his mindset and wanting to make his four year old daughter proud.
  • Preparation.  Are you preparing well enough to earn success?  Rory famously spent a full day with Jack Nicklaus discussing The Master specifically and how to be successful.
  • Adversity.  Rory had been searching for his career grand slam since 2014 and was starting to get the “Caves Under Pressure” label.  He endured his fair share of adversity (only champion to have four double bogeys at Augusta) as well.  How do you respond when things don’t go your way?
  • Strengths.  Do you play to your strengths?  Rory is an aggressive golfer.  Once he made the decision to play into it and not play conservatively, he was dominant.  His shot on 15 will live on forever.
  • Reset.  How well do you shake off a failure?  Can you come back even stronger?  Rory bogeyed 18 to force the playoff with Justin Rose, then came back moments later to birdie the same hole to take home the green jacket.  Incredible.
