What do effective leaders do?

What actions do good leaders take?

What does an effective leader look like?  Are they doers?  Are they teachers?  What makes them successful leaders in the end?  There are many ways you can be a leader, but how do we know what decisions to make?  After reading What Effective Leaders Do by: Sean Glaze, I wanted to give you my thoughts and takeaways from this very entertaining read on this exact topic.  Enjoy.

  • Story.  My favorite aspect of this book is that it’s not structured as your typical leadership book.  It’s more of a fictional-style story-telling vibe that shapes up to be very entertaining.
  • Experience.  Experience doesn’t make you a better leader, awareness does.  Here are the four stages of awareness: 1) Unaware, 2) Symptoms Aware, 3) Problems Aware, and 4) Solution Aware.
  • Culture.  The author defines “System of Leadership” as: Simply the sum of behaviors you allow to be repeated on your team.  This is your culture.
  • Assumptions.  There are four key aspects of assumptions: 1) Purpose, 2) Principles, 3) People, and 4) Politeness.
  • Nice.  Neglected issues cripples excellence.  Are you a nice leader?
  • Values.  Only helpful if discussed with your team.  Behaviors must match the expectations.
  • Leaders.  Shift stuff to staff.  Put your people first at all times.
  • Meetings.  During one-on-one meetings with your team members, make sure to implement the Four C’s: 1) Connection – How are you doing?, 2) Challenge – What are you currently dealing with?, 3) Clarity – What can I help you with?, and 4) Commitment – What will you do next?
  • Problem.  Point at the problem, not your people.
  • Feedback Model.  POINT: Prepare with permission and purpose, Objectively describe behavior, Identify the impact, Negotiate next steps, and Track progress.
