What does it take to be an outstanding coach?

Are you an outstanding coach?

It’s one thing to be a coach, but do others consider you an outstanding coach?  What does it take to be a successful leader?  You must be consistent with your actions and gain the trust of your team.  It may take years to perfect your coaching style, but be true to yourself and stay the course.  In the #CJJblog this week, I wanted to give you some tips on how you can become the outstanding coach you are striving to be.  Enjoy.

  • Lead with integrity. Don’t just lead with your actions, but integrity as well.  Your team will oftentimes mimic your actions and it’s critical that you carry yourself in a way that promotes integrity.  You are always on stage and in the spotlight, so act accordingly.
  • You must care about your team not only as team members, but as people as well.  Always remember that people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.  How do you care for others?
  • Outstanding teacher. Study your craft and become an expert.  Your knowledge and expertise will drive your ability to be a leader.  How do you study your craft?
  • Be a grower. Never settle on being average.  Always seek to grow your mind and allow your desire for growth to flow over to your team.  How do you seek to constantly be a grower?
  • Be inspirational to those around you.  Always encourage them to think bigger and accomplish great things.  How do you motivate others to believe in themselves?
  • Share ideas. Communication is crucial to being an outstanding coach.  Do you share your thoughts and ideas with others or keep them to yourself?  Encourage the we over me
  • Always stay humble, no matter your accomplishments.  Give credit to your team and staff whenever you can.  How do you stay humble?

Did You Know?  Coach Jim Johnson received a fantastic message from a former player after they were accepted into a college graduate program: “I want to thank you for everything that you have taught me and for the reference as well! I couldn’t have done it without your teachings and coaching!”

Life Tip #3:  Leave a profit everywhere you go.  Everything you touch turns to gold, not garbage.
