Is America’s Team finished?
For those of you who follow the NFL, you are probably aware of the recent struggles of the Dallas Cowboys (Currently 3-3 on the season). While many of you may be enjoying it (myself included), there are some major issues within the team leadership and organization right now. Their recent 47-9 drubbing at the hands of the Detroit Lions on Sunday was an NFL Scorigami, but also raises the question if it’s time to panic in Dallas. The #CJJblog this week takes a deeper look at what’s really going on with America’s Team and specifically the Owner, President, and General Manager of the team, Jerry Jones. Enjoy.
- Needs to be liked. Jerry Jones needs everyone to like him. The main downfall here is that he does this with his words to the media, not through actions.
- Decision-making. While there is value in taking time to make big decisions, Jerry Jones has a history of being slow and taking too long, coming across as desperate. For example, contract negotiations with his star players have notoriously dragged on for too long, resulting in hamstringing the organization from a salary cap perspective.
- False optimism. This hurts the team because his false optimism is so far from reality. The shine and luster of the Cowboys has worn off since the 90’s. Free agents don’t want to come there any longer just because of the star on the helmet, but Jones thinks they do.
- Lack of support. Mainly for Head Coach Mike McCarthy. They have had three straight seasons with 12 wins, but McCarthy still does not have a contract extension.
- Need for attention. He’s always in front of the media micromanaging the team and his staff. Simply put, he’s too involved. Their last Super Bowl appearance was in 1996. Something needs to change, Jerry.
