What makes you sad as a leader?

With the recent events going on in the country (Charlie Kirk, school shooting in Evergreen, CO, etc.) I have been struck with tremendous feelings of sadness.  From a leadership perspective, we need to shift our mindset to become more unifying in our leadership tactics.  In the #CJJblog this week, I explain why I am Leadership Sad and what we can do as leaders to focus more on unity.

  • Yourself.  What do you believe in?  Are you (and your team) crystal clear on this?  Be open to others’ beliefs, but always true to yourself.
  • Understanding.  Always seek (and listen) first to understand, then to be understood.
  • Curiosity.  Always keep the mindset that you can learn from everyone.  Keep your eyes and ears open for learning opportunities.
  • Respect.  Show great respect for all races, religion, and genders.
  • Disagreements.  Challenge others’ views, allow them to challenge yours, and have empathy.  Remember that violence is not the answer.
  • Model.  Be the role model others need.  Treat others well and they will seek your guidance as a leader.
  • Answers.  Remember that the answers need to be the best answers, not ones that are yours or first.
  • Social Media.  Use your social media platforms to spread love and positivity, not hate.
  • Collaboration.  We will live in a better world if we unite and collaborate with our team.  Dictating and controlling their actions is not the answer.
