Why (and how) should you become an expert?

Are you an expert in your field?

In a world of heavy self-education and efficiency, becoming an expert in a field is now more important than ever.  It’s also as easy as ever to accomplish because of all the resources we have at our fingertips.  We live in a time where we are relentlessly bombarded with masterclasses and ebooks, and it’s often extremely difficult to weed out what is actually worth our time.  In the #CJJblog this week, I talk about why and how you should be doing everything in your power to become an expert in your field of interest.  Enjoy.

  • (WHY) Speed.  Have a few hours to kill each day?  Take a masterclass online to hone your skills.  Listen to an audiobook for 10 minutes before you go to bed.  Technology has given us no excuses.  If you want to learn something today, you can.
  • (WHY) Combo skills.  Do you have a mastermind group?  Each person you trust and take with you on your expertise journey will be able to give you new perspective and teach you new skills.
  • (HOW) Topic.  Pick a topic.  What are you passionate about?  What are you currently doing to learn more about it?  Find something that gets you fired up.  For me, I’m passionate about: 1) Motivating people, 2) Leadership expertise, and 3) Building outstanding teams.
  • (HOW) Interest. Make sure you choose something that is interesting to you and relevant.  Niche yourself into a valuable industry because people will pay for knowledge.
  • (HOW) Fascination.  If your curiosity is piqued, interest and results will follow.  Are you fascinated by your work?
  • (HOW) Learn.  Here are the best ways I learn: 1) Reading books, 2) Listen to audiobooks, and 3) Write in my learning journal.
  • (HOW) Seek out others.  Do you have someone you look up to or wish you could learn directly from?  Reach out to them and tell them your story.  Search for ways to be proactive on your journey and always be prepared.
  • (HOW) Mastermind groups.  Do you have regular meetings with like-minded individuals?  In-person or calls are always helpful to continue your learning.
  • (HOW) Share.  There is no better way to become an expert than to teach it to someone else.  It helps your brain think about it in a different way and builds a good foundation to build upon.
