Book Review: The Power of One More

Have you read any good books lately?

Recently, I read the book The Power of One More By: Ed Mylett and was amazed at how much it got me to think about everyday things in such a different way.  I have been listening to his podcast now for about a year (you should, too) and love his stuff, so reading his book was a natural progression.  This book helps you get into a very unique mindset and helps you stay committed to the choices we make.  In the #CJJblog this week, I give you some highlights and things I learned from this fantastic book.  Enjoy.

  • Concept.  It’s in the title, The Power of One More.  Do you give up on things easily?  Are you someone who second-guesses their decisions?  He tells a powerful story about his father’s battle with alcoholism and motivates you to always give it another shot.
  • One more try.  Try to always be in the one more try mindset, where if you are not succeeding at something, just give it another shot.  You never know what is going to happen.  He really speaks to the power of perseverance very well.
  • Time management.  Ed talks about the importance of time management and I have three big takeaways: 1) He breaks his days into three blocks (6am to Noon, Noon to 6pm, and 6pm to midnight) and treats them as separate days, 2) Successful people tackle their daily tasks with sprints (go hard, then rest), and 3) Attack the first 30 minutes of each day (time block).
  • One more association.  Always refine your peer group.  Most people look to add individuals who bring value to them or their network, but are you also assessing your peers for who might be hindering you as well?
  • One more higher standard.  If you are not reaching your goals, raise your standards.  Once you have the correct standards, hitting your goals will be automatic.  Do you have high enough standards?
  • One more question.  Are you asking the right questions?  1) To your family members: “What is one more thing I can do to make you feel supported?”  2) In leadership: “How can I show appreciation to those I work with?” 3) To yourself in thought: “How can I adjust my thinking to make fewer excuses?”
  • One more inconvenience.  Convenience and greatness cannot coexist.  If you want to be great, start by doing something different or inconvenient first.

Did You Know?  Coach and his podcast team recently released their 50th episode and eclipsed the year mark since their first release.  Check out highlights from their first year HERE.
