Two coaching GOATs have moved on – What’s next?

Who is the greatest coach of all-time?

Last week, we saw two of the coaching GOATs (Greatest of All-Time) become unemployed within 24 hours of each other.  Bill Belichick (Patriots – Parted ways) and Nick Saban (Alabama – Retired) both have left their mark on the football world, but also coaches and leaders across the globe.  In the #CJJblog this week, I give you their similarities, their differences, and what made them so great.  Enjoy.

  • Similarities.
    • Passion.  Both Saban and Belichick were passionate about the game of football and motivating everyone around them to be the best they can be.
    • Career.  They also had similar career struggles early on.  Belichick struggled in Cleveland, while Saban unsuccessfully tried his hand in the NFL in Miami before jumping to the college game.
    • System.  Both coaches had similar mindsets and mentalities, making their process very similar as well.  Everyone knows about the “Bama” or “Patriot” way of doing things.
    • Pressure.  Especially in-game pressure during big moments in their career, both of these guys handled these moments with tremendous poise.  When at their best, they would always find a way to win the big games.
    • Balance.  While both coaches’ careers originated on the defensive side of the ball, they also had great balance/involvement within their staff and locker room.
  • Differences.
    • Adapting.  Specifically to the offensive side of the ball.  Since both coaches were defensive-focused, it was necessary to adapt to their offenses and Nick Saban did this much better than Belichick.  Without Brady (controversially), his offenses have struggled.
    • Tree success.  If you ever want to do a fun (nerdy) football exercise, look up each of the coaching trees for Nick Saban and Bill Belichick, who was on their staff at one point.  Saban’s was much better, but Belichick still had some good ones.
    • Consistency.  Nick Saban was much more consistent than Bill recently in their careers.  Also, Bill faded drastically over the last few years.
  • Will Belichick write one more chapter?
