What Rafael Nadal taught me about relentlessness

Do you recognize relentlessness when you see it?

After suffering a rare foot injury about six months ago, many tennis fans (myself included) feared retirement was in the cards for Rafael Nadal.  Not only was he able to return, but he won his record-breaking 21st Grand Slam Singles Title, separating himself from Federer and Djokovic.  How was he able to come back and be so effective?  Relentlessness.  In the #CJJblog this week, I sing his praises and admire his conduct on and off the court.  Enjoy.

  • Commitment.  Nadal always strives to be the best he can be.  Are you always looking to become better at your craft?
  • Grit.  His chronic foot injury was initially considered to be very serious and likely career-threatening, but his return was dominant, as he won the Australian Open a few weeks ago, in just his second tournament back.  That’s grit.
  • Focus.  He always says in his post-match interviews that he focuses on one point at a time.  This is likely why he has such epic comebacks, he’s never out of a match because of his relentless focus.
  • Role model.  He is a true professional and holds himself to very high standards both on and off the court.  Are you a good role model for others?
  • Consistency and persistence.  Nadal (more than anyone else in the history of the sport in Major Tournaments) finds a way to win.  Down two sets to none?  Not a problem.  How persistent are you?
  • Responsibility.  I have never heard him make excuses.  If he loses, he blames himself and focuses on what he can do to improve.  Are you the same way?
  • Student of the game.  Are you someone who is hungry for knowledge?  Can you put your ego aside and as for help?  Nadal has always been great with this, even through his different trainers and coaches.  He always seeks knowledge and how he can improve his game.
