The art & science of becoming happier

How do you become a happier person?

After reading the book “Build the Life You Want” by: Oprah Winfrey and Arthur Brooks, I wanted to share some thoughts and ideas I learned from the book on becoming happier.  How are you going to become a happier person in 2024?  The #CJJblog this week has you covered with these happiness tips.  Enjoy.

  • Personal definitions.  Three key areas for you to define internally for yourself:

1) Enjoyment: Instead of pleasure, focus on building community and being self-aware

2) Satisfaction: Great, but does not come without sacrifice

3) Purpose: Gives us hope and inner peace

  • Self-accountability.  You become the boss of your own life, not an observer.
  • Mindset.  Happiness is not the goal, and unhappiness is not the enemy.
    • Happiness is the direction, not the destination.  We can all be happier.
    • Deal with your fears head on.
  • PANAS test.  Positive and Negative Affect Test.  You are likely one of four people:

1) Cheerleader

2) Mad Scientist

3) Judge

4) Poet

  • Negative emotions.  Appreciate them because they help you understand your purpose.  Once you understand your negative emotions, instead of experiencing them, you can then realize they can be overcome.
  • Change.  When you can’t change the world, choose how you experience it.
  • Emotions. How can we learn from our emotions?

1) Observe your intense emotions

2) Journal your emotions

3) Create a database of emotions

4) Look for meaning during the tough times
