What can we learn from the two (new) NFL GOATs?

What have you learned from the newest dynasty in sports?

Super Bowl LVIII did not disappoint between the Chiefs and 49ers.  A bit of a slow first half quickly turned into an overtime thriller.  The Chiefs ended up winning their 3rd title in the last five years, firmly supplanting themselves as an established dynasty.  In the #CJJblog this week, I give you six things we can learn from the main two focal points of their success; Andy Reid (Head Coach) and Patrick Mahomes (Quarterback).  Enjoy.

  • Andy Reid
    • All three phases.  To have a successful football team, you must excel at Offense, Defense, and Special Teams.  The Chiefs did exactly that in the Super Bowl.  In fact, the Defense and Special Teams were so good, you could make an argument the Offense was the worst unit.
    • Defensive Coordinator.  The Chiefs DC, Steve Spagnuolo, spent some time as an NFL Head Coach previously, but has really excelled as the main guy for the KC Defense.  Reid has done a great job keeping him around and letting Spags call his own game.  Spagnuolo became the first Coordinator ever to win 4 Super Bowls.  Incredible.
    • Culture.  Andy Reid has created a culture where emotions can be expressed freely and all ideas are shared to better the team.  Conflict is okay if it’s a positive conversation and leads to better performances.  What type of culture does your team have?
  • Patrick Mahomes.
    • Embrace challenges.  Mahomes is quickly becoming one of the most clutch players in the history of sports.  No moment is too big for him.  Don’t believe me?  Check out this insane postseason Mahomes stat.
    • Never satisfied.  Just moments after winning his third Super Bowl ring (and Super Bowl MVP), Mahomes immediately jumped into next season, saying things like “We’re not done.”
    • Respect.  The Chiefs QB naturally demands respect from his teammates from his demeanor and play on the field.  They not only believe in him, but want to perform at their best to support his greatness.
