How do you build trust within an organization?

Is trust being built around you?

Trust is an important part of developing a successful team.  How do you go about building such an environment?  Throughout my many years as a high school basketball coach, I have found many different ways to build trust within a team.  It takes a significant amount of time and work to gain, but can all be destroyed with a single lapse in judgement.  Here are a few tips for you to follow if you seek to build trust among your team.  Enjoy.

  • Say what you do and do what you say. Some people are all talk, while others back it up with their actions.  As a leader, make sure you always follow through on your word.  There is nothing that damages relationships more than being unreliable.  Are your words reliable?
  • Be impeccable with your word. Always tell the truth and build a foundation that promotes others to do the same.  Does your team believe in each others word?
  • Catch people doing the right thing. In an age where mistakes are heavily criticized, make sure you praise people in public for doing good.  Develop a team mindset where others congratulate each other as well.
  • Family atmosphere. There is no stronger circle of trust than family members.  If you create this type of atmosphere among your team members, trust will follow.  Sending birthday cards and congratulating others for life accomplishments are good tactics to implement.  People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.
