What is your story?
As many of you know, I post these blogs every week and enjoy it very much. I would like to take this week to take a step back and do a Q&A to help you better understand my career path, successes, and failures. How did I get into coaching? Do I regret anything? You get it all below in a two part Coach’s Career Path blog we are starting this week. I give you my first half (early days) of my coaching career below. Enjoy!
1) How did you get into coaching? I got into coaching because my Dad was my high school b-ball coach. My love of basketball and the fact that I wasn’t good enough to play in the NBA also made it easy to get into coaching, allowing me to stay involved with the game I loved.
2) What would you consider your Big Break in your career? My big break in coaching was when I was let go by Churchville Chili. Bill Van Gundy offered me a position to be his assistant at GCC. I learned a lot to what it takes to be a successful coach.
3) What did you struggle with most in your early coaching years? Early, I struggled because I wanted to win games more than anything else. When I started to study leadership, it became my calling to help my players become winners on and off the court.
4) When did you sense that you were making progress? I started to believe I was becoming a better coach when we had turned the Greece Olympia Basketball program around. Our last three seasons were some of the best in school history.
5) What helped you the most in overcoming your failures early on in your career? What helped me overcome early failures was when we started to win more. I believed I was helping our players become better people that were making a positive contribution to society.
Did you know? Coach will be sharing his presentation on becoming a more powerful presenter to a class at SUNY Brockport here in Rochester, NY.
